Crochet storage solutions: Hanger pockets

Recently I have moved to a different place in another country, and I now have around 1/2 of the living space I used to have, and maybe 1/4 of the storage space compared to the previous flat.

I have found some very useful tips in blogs from people who are living in small spaces, and one of the advice is to store things horizontally, hanging as much stuff on the walls as possible. Now that I do not have the luxury of drawers, it is a bit tricky to store underwear and other small stuff. Which made me create this:

The good things is that you can choose what size the pockets are (I may add one more in the middle). What I recommend is to use quite thick yarn here if you want the pockets to somehow maintain their structure when you fill them with stuff.

Cool sides:

– This is quite a quick project

– All the socks and mittens are out of your way occupying shelf space

– You can think ahead and decide which size of pockets would be best for you, and how many pockets you need.

Here are brief instructions:

You will use the same instructions to create the background or the body of the pockets (dark blue) and the front of the pockets (light blue). Repeat the instructions for as many rows as you need to reach the size of pockets you need.

I used hook size 5 and thick cotton strands. You will also need 2 buttons (or more if you want to have all pockets with buttons).

1. ch 45
2. ch 3, 1 dc into 4th st from the hook, 1 dc into next st x 2, (ch 4, skip 3 st, 1 dc into next st x 4) x 6
3. ch 4, (8 dc into the next loop) x 6, ch 1, dc into the 3rd ch of the first chains of the previous round
4. ch 6, 1 dc into each of the 4 middle dcs of the next dc bunch, (ch 4, 1 dc into 4 middle dcs of the next dc bunch) x 5, ch 3, dc into the 3rd ch of the beginning chs of previous round
5. ch 3, 5 dcs into the first ch loop, (8 dcs into the next ch loop)x5, 6 dcs into the last ch loop
6. ch 3, 1 dc into next st x 3, (ch 4, 1 dc into each of the 4 middle dcs of the next dc bunch) x 4, 1 dc into 3 last dc and into 3rd starting ch of previous round

7… You now see how the pattern is coming along, repeat rows 3-6 until you have the desired length of the body.

Using the same pattern, create the pocket fronts (light blue in the pic). I used scs to attach the pockets to the body all around. Then I made loops for buttons with 20 ch by sl st into middle of the first and last 8 dcs of top row of the body (dark blue part). Then sew on the buttons, and voila!
